Carew Academy

Review
This SEN school is not fit for purpose. Pupils are frightened, anxious, dysregulated, vulnerable and depressed as a result of the inability of the school to: understand and provide for the neuro divergent and mental health needs of pupils; provide a safe environment in the classroom, corridors, toilets, shared hall, student support unit and outside play areas; differentiate learning in the classroom; provide appropriate support in the classroom following recommendations of OT, EP or other guidance specified in the EHCP; provide additional therapies as specified in the EHCP and advertised by the school; or provide basic care. The school is unable to communicate with parents what level students are working at and how they can achieve their academic goals. Apart from a very few exceptions, staff have low expectations of pupils and speak of them negatively without regard for their strengths or SEN; the staff around the child change every year with no evidence of experiential learning in staff, young person's feedback being shared and communicated from year to year. Parent concerns are dismissed and there is no parent voice. Parent governors follow senior management rather than listening to and explore parent concerns. The school has an increased turnover of pupils leaving the school. Senior management are defensive and bullying. The school is not child focussed and does not care for vulnerable young people. Children are not heard.
